Programme Types:
Sheffield Live! is a community based radio station. They are involved and are run mainly by local community. Sheffield Live! caters to a niche audience, meaning they exist to entertain a smaller audience compared to that of a larger radio station i.e. Sheffield Hallam.
Sheffield Live!'s purpose is to provide entertainment to the local community and to help the community in terms of life skills. They are an in independent company, so any money that they make has to go back into running the show and they are not allowed to make a profit. Any of the work that they do is funded by the public so the community plays a big part in running sheffield live.
Sheffield Live! helps with project and activities involving young people and the community in general. They have helped in organising events throughout Sheffield, helping to form a youth organisation that educates young people through music.
Genres:
Sheffield live has a large range of genres so that they can cater for the range of ethnicity's in sheffield this includes Jazz, soul, ethnic, rock RnB etc...
The genre is also split between the older and the younger, the younger generation have a range of genres that suits them like RnB radio stations and weekly competitions for young people to enter with the winner receiving prizes.
Audience(s) Profile:
Since they cater to an underserved part of the community, the target audience is actually quite a large range in terms of content. An example of this is Age.
Jake, is 22 years old and currently working as an sales associate in Hollister , enjoys listening to talk shows and likes RnB and Reggae. He like to help out with Sheffield live as much as he can as he has been in Sheffield all of his life. Being an sales associate, he is a part of the C1, C2, D section of social class.
Production Process:
There are three different forms in the production process there is the pre-production, production and post-production. During pre-production, the treatment must be written up to create a proposal for a radio show. If the idea is good then they continue to do all of the other things like writing the script for the episodes. For the radio show to be successful, they must also organise team meetings to organise their schedules and the production content. During this, they will have organised the PRS licensing and discuss the legal and ethical issues that the radio show will have to consider. what ethical guidelines the radio show might have to avoid. Production is where the actual radio show is made with all of the material from the pre-production stage. The post-production will be finalising l of the pieces of audio and do any last minute touches before the episode is released.
Market Share:
Like all of the other forms of companies, they have to go against other radio stations to provide the needs and wants of the audience. Sheffield Live!, being a community radio, they do not necessarily get funded from a huge company and is more or less ran by the community. Community radio stations like these are considered the ones that pick up after the commercial stations, this is because although commercial stations cater for a wider audience not everyone will like what is being played to them. So community based radio stations are there to fill the gap. Community stations don't get profit but use the money being brought in by the promotional sections of the radio shows to help improve the station and the content it provides to the community.
Being a community radio station, it provides content that almost every commercial radio station doesn’t provide, so therefore it is targeted towards a nice audience. This is to aim towards the underserved part of the community who are most likely in the older age brackets. They hold around 11% of the radio audience in Sheffield.
