Planning the Radio Show/Podcast

Intended radio station /broadcaster:
The intended radio show for my radios how is Sheffield Live, they are a community radio show that are based in Sheffield. They are my intended radio station because one of their main purposes is to provide original content by local people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Target audience:
The intended target audience for this radio show are people who are in the age range of 15 - 24. According to the most recent census (2011) out of the 552,700 people who live in sheffield 98,400 people are aged between 15 - 24, this means that my radio show will be targeting just over 17% of the population of sheffield. For people to gain an understanding of the radio show they would have to have at least one of the two consoles as the radio shows is about video games. According to the National Readership Survey there are six social grades. These are:

The target audience for my radio show would be in the social grades B,C1,C2,D. For the younger portion of my target audience they would still be living with their parents so they wont have their own disposable income so they relay on there parents. Since gaming can be quite expensive this portion of the target audience would be B or C1. However the old portion of my target audience are most likely university students and students don't tend to have a lot of money so they would be classed in the C2, D grades.

Content plan:
Within the podcast, there will be an introduction of the game that I will be looking at or a round up of what happened at an event. If the game is new then there will be a breakdown of trailer and a talk about all of the latest news about the game. If the game has been released then I will be reviewing the game and then giving my personal views on it and if it is worth buying. I would then talk about if there is any sort of special content within the game that could be useful for the gamer.

Running order:
Considering the length of each of the audio provided, an estimate of around 3+ minutes of talk must be provided. The script will have to adapt to several advertisements which could be about game companies, upcoming video games (Trailer in pure audio form) and local communities focus on games.

After the jingle plays out, we begin with the introductions and introduce ourselves as the presenters of our Radio talk show. The introductions shouldn't drag out too long and that's why we introduce the main content for the given episode in bullet points and afterwards proceed in to talking about each of the topics in more depth. After one topic has been discussed or has been presented, before the next content is presented, an advertisement will be played in between to give some time to prepare the next material (if needed) and give time for the listener(s) to absorb the given information. This pattern follows through until all topics have been presented and discussed. The show is ended by creating a small summary at the end of the given episode and a final jingle is played which is more likely to create a lasting effect on the listener.

The advertisements will most likely be about a local source such as Sumo Digital. The advertisement has to be relevant to the content we have provided and that could be content such as what games they produce and what games they will be planning to release; games that may be upcoming could come from Sumo Digital. This type of trend could follow through the advertisements.

P1: Welcome back. So back on topic: GTA V.

P2: It is now the year 2015 and rockstar north have finally released GTA v for PC, the re-release for this version was made available for PC on the 14th of April. The re-release changes little from the basic gameplay of the original version however, one of the more significant changes that have been made is that the online multiplier mode has now been increase from 16 to 30. The latest version of GTA V also includes a first person option, this seems great at first however after playing around with it a while you begin to notice that everything has become a lot harder. For example when driving you can only see what is in front of you, so you end up constantly crashing into things every time you want to turn. Although this is a setback, it also enhances other aspects of the game. An example of this is shooting, when you shooting up the place if feels like you’re playing call of duty I think that it is amazing that you can actually aim down your sights now.

P1: There's been a lot of concern about the game not running in its promised 60 frames per second. The reason? People's computers.
P2: One of the other things that I notice when playing this is that the Pc version can support 60fps and it is also 4K resolution compatible, this is good news for anyone that has the equipment to support this that wants to really bring the game alive.
P1: As far as I know, the game has been optimised as much as possible but it needs some end-market spec hardware to run as smooth as possible. The new 'Director Mode' is a welcomed feature but with the game still being mostly the same apart from the improved graphics and online net code, there hasn't been much other additions which have left fans concerned. The fans may have been looking for some improvements.
P2: The PC version of GTA V has gone down very well with the public, metacritic had calculated an average score of 97 out of 100, IGN and VideoGamer.com had given the game 10/10. Many had stated that the main thing that they was impressed with the most was enhanced visuals.

[Advertisement for Lionhead Studios which lasts for around 30 seconds]
From the Fable franchise, Albion is once again in danger from evil. Only heroes can banish the beasts and the evil mastermind and that hero is you.

Return to the world of Albion and fight as one of the several heroes, each with their own skills and equipment. Melee, Ranged or Magic, it's your choice what you want to use in the battlefield. You can quest on your own as a "The Hero" or you could battle the forces that threaten the world as a group. You can fight together with 3 other of your friends over the internet. So what else is there to wait for go and-

Don't think that's everything. Sure, you can play as a hero but have you ever felt what it's like to be the mastermind behind it all? You can choose to fight against the 'heroes' and impend their progress by sending out hordes of enemies, creating traps and separating the heroes stopping them in their tracks. Disrupt their order as much as you can. This is your "Quest" after all...

P1: We are back with some news on what's happening on the LCS this year and today, we will be focusing on the eSports side of things with League of Legends. . TSM (Team Solo Mid) has won the North American LCS and are set for this years Summer split with the other teams chosen from the NA LCS. On our side of the world, Fnatic has taken the European LCS and are joining TSM in the 2nd playoffs.

P1: Looks like Fnatic might be representing Europe again and it seems like they are even stronger than their last years performance. Still, we can't rule out the fact that UOL (Unicorns of Love) was the dark horse with their performance against GMB (Gambit Gaming) and SK Gaming. Looks like things are going to get heated up this summer, especially with the teams that are playing.

Production schedule:

Launch date:

From looking at the radio schedule the radio show could be launched on wednesday between June and July between 3 P.M and 5 P.M, the reason for this is that at this time students will be making their way home. Since there are no free slots it could replace the current radio show there as sheffield live already has a lot of music based radio shows and from what I am aware of there is only one other gaming radio show.

Relevant legal and/or ethical issues:
One of main things that I need to consider is I’m I breaking any copyright laws. Since I am planning to have the external sources of audio that I would have gathered from the internet, I would find out whether it is free to use or not. Therefore I will need to contact the relevant people regarding audio. Another thing that I would have to consider is that is the content suitable for the audience, sometime in the future there may be games that are controversial to the public for being too explicit, if we decide to review the game it may lead to some backlash with our audience. One why we could combat this is to include a warning before the podcast so that stop listening to that particular if it might cause offence to them. To add to this the other thing that I need to consider is that are the games appropriate for me, since I am only seventeen and some of the game out there have an eighteen rating it wold be right for me to review it, this is because it would set up a bad example to the audience as it would seem that I am encouraging young people to go out and play the games. Having a radio show or podcast means that you have a certain level of responsibility for the public.

In november 2004 sheffield live had applied for a community broadcasting licence so that they could bring modern programming to sheffield, is was done so because Ofcom had introduced this license which was needed by all of the community based radio shows. This means that any of the content that I have in the radio show whether it is music by artist or some soundtracks from games, it will be allowed to be broadcasted.
My radio show would need to abide the Ofcom rules Protecting the Under-Eighteens which is in conjunction Harm and Offence. This says that I must ensure that accepted standards are applied to the content of radio services so as to provide adequate protection for members of the public. This includes:

  • The service on which the material is broadcast.
  • The time of broadcast.
  • The effect of the material on viewers or listeners who may come across it unawares.
My radio show must not include any dangerous behaviour or demonstrate anything to do with exorcism or the paranormal.
Any sort of competitions or voting most be conducted fairly and broadcaster must draw up rules for a broadcast competition or vote. These rules must be clear and appropriately made known.

Meaning of Broadcast competition:
A competition or free prize draw featured in a programme in which viewers or listeners are invited to enter by any means for the opportunity to win a prize.
Meaning of Voting.
Features in a programme in which viewers or listeners are invited to resigners a vote by any means to decide or influence. at any stage, the outcome of a contest.
